Exports target BRIC markets

The Export Promotion Department will this year focus on Asia, the Middle East and emerging markets as traditional markets remain sluggish. Markets that offer a high potential for trade include Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC), said director-general Srirat Rastapana. "We are yet to be assured about the economic recovery, particularly in the United States and the European Union, as the IMF recently cautioned against premature exits from anti-crisis measures in developed countries," said Mrs Srirat. The department next week will stage its first trade mission to Libya with Thai business representatives. Mrs Srirat said Libya had high demand for many products including auto parts, food, construction and furnishings. PTT Plc will participate in the mission, as it is interested in investing in oil, natural gas and petrochemicals in Libya. The department also will work with the National Innovation Agency to develop distribution and markets for innovative Thai products and services such as healthy food and green products. The Commerce Ministry has set a target of 14% growth in export value this year to US$173.85 billion. To help hit the target, the ministry plans to appoint 10 senior officials to work with businesses on export strategies for 10 priority areas. They are: food and rice; textiles and garments and jewellery; electronics and electrical appliances; construction materials; plastic and plastic products; automobile and parts; rubber products; unique Thai products such as Thai Hom Mali rice, silk, orchids, spas and restaurants; cosmetics and pharmaceutical products; and printing. The 10 priority export goods account for 85% of Thailand's export value.
